Nature Conservation in action.
In 2020, the founder of 1865, Jean-Paul Tostée, assisted the crisis committee involved in cleaning up the oil spill that occurred after the Japanese bulk carrier “Wakashio” ran aground on a coral reef situated on the Southeast coast of Mauritius. A crisis committee was formed to prevent the catastrophe from doing more damage to the lagoon and coastline and prevent the oil spill from causing even more harm to the already devastatingly affected natural environment.
Being a local in the area, Jean-Paul felt it his duty to be involved and commented that the whole saga was an assault on the senses. He led the logistics team that deployed public-made barriers preventing the oil from reaching stretches of the coastline. In the end, 12km of coastline was affected by the oil spill, but without Jean-Paul’s involvement and his coordination with the authorities and the press, it may have been much worse.
